Pentecost Holy Spirit Hats from Paper Plates

Can you imagine the fear and worry the Apostles had after Jesus’ ascension? Here they are without Jesus in a place and time when supporting him was not all that popular.  But then something no one could have imagined happened, the Holy Spirit came down and filled them.  At the end of Easter, we have Pentecost- the time when the Apostles were filled with the Holy Spirit and given a new courage to go and preach the gospel. In the book of Acts, it’s described as tongues of fire coming down on the Apostles.  Whether you are teaching or just celebrating this important day in our church, your kids can have fun making these tongues of fire Holy Spirit Hats!

You’ll need:

  • 1 paper plate/ child
  • Some yellow/orange/red tissue paper cut into little squares
  • glue
  • scissors
  • Hole puncher (optional)
  • time to do some prep work for your younger kids

To make these:

First cut out a flame shape in the middle of your plate.  You can make these up as you go OR use the template printable below.

Here’s the template cut out in blue cardstock.  Then you just trace around this on your plates to know where to cut.

If you are letting smaller children cut these out, punch a few holes in the space you are cutting out to give them an easy starting point!

Then have your students ball up the pieces of yellow/orange/red tissue paper and glue them to the flame part.  It doesn’t take much glue to do this, consider making a glue sponge to dab your tissue balls on for gluing so you don’t end up with drippy hats!  When we made these in co-op, we gave them a puddle of glue and some Q-tips.

Once it’s had a little bit to dry, fold the flame part up, and stick it on your head!

Happy Pentecost! May the Holy Spirit fill you!
