Lent is fast approaching and I decided to do something different this year with my kids: a Lenten Art Journal.
My Lenten Printables Bundle has a lot of great activities and ideas, but we’ve done a lot of those the last few years and are ready for something new and different. I took the passion story from the book of Luke and spread it out over 40 days.
This printable art Journal prints 4 ‘pages’ to a page. Each page has a small part of the passion story on it for you to illustrate, journal about, pray about, or just think over. The idea is that your kids can digest the passion story, a little at a time and create a keepsake illustrated book this Lent.
Print it on cardstock for durability, cut apart on the gray lines and then you have a few options for binding. I bound mine with a 1″ ring (you can also find them at the dollar store), however you could also have it bound at Office Depot/Staple with a spiral binding, or hole punch and tie with a ribbon or yarn. I liked the ring idea, because you can open it and take a page out to work on.
On Ash Wednesday open it up to page 1 (they’re all numbered in the top right corner!), read aloud the scripture and let your kids journal or illustrate that page. You can make a picture that literally goes with the words. Or pick one word to write larger and meditate on. Or journal about what that scripture means to you and what it makes you think about.
I’m planning to print a journal for my 8yr old, 5 yr old and myself to work on this Lent. If we get behind (because I know that will happen), we’ll just double up on illustrating some days. I’m also planning to let them use a variety of mediums, coloring pencils, watercolors, or even make collages with scraps of construction paper.
