Saint Lucy lived in a time of great persecution of Christians.  She was said to be very brave and several miraculous stories are told of her.  She is often depicted with eyes on a plate, since the story goes that they were gouged out by order of the governor because she refused to marry the man to whom she was betrothed.  In another explanation, she gouged out her own eyes to dissuade her suitor from wanting to marry her still.  In any case, multiple stories tell of her bravery and steadfast faith in face of torture and death.

Saint Lucy’s Feast day is widely celebrated in Sweden, with special saffron rolls, songs and festivities.  I recently ordered this book:Lucia Morning in Sweden  about Saint Lucia’s Day in Sweden as told by three young children.   I love the cute and happy illustrations in the book, and can’t wait to read it to my daughter! I’m still trying to decide if I should save it as a present, or go ahead and just give it to the kids so we can read it in time for Saint Lucy’s day this year.  What would you do?

Saint Lucy, Pray for us!
